Local guide

Doing business in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s businesses range from the jewellery trade at Zaveri Bazaar and the electronics market on Lamington Road to garment and leather workshops in Dharavi, warehouses in Bhiwandi and factories in the MIDC estates of Andheri, Thane, Turbhe and Taloja.

Common needs include working capital to pay suppliers and carry stock, machinery for workshops and factories, and funds for a second outlet. Lenders look at your GST returns, bank statements, ITR and how long the business has run. If your premises are rented, keep the registered leave and licence agreement and your shop and establishment registration or Udyam certificate ready.

Lenders decide PIN code by PIN code which areas they serve, so a unit in Taloja and a shop in Kalbadevi may be covered by different lenders. Share your business PIN code to see who can lend to you.

Good to know

Your rights as a business borrower.

  • A Key Fact Statement before you sign

For MSME term loans, the lender must give you a Key Fact Statement with the APR, every fee and the repayment schedule before you sign. A fee that isn’t in it can’t be charged without your consent.

  • No prepayment fee on many floating-rate loans

For floating-rate business loans to individuals and micro and small enterprises, sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, banks and larger NBFCs can’t charge a prepayment fee. Small finance banks, regional rural banks, some co-operative banks and mid-sized NBFCs can’t charge one on such loans up to ₹50 lakh.

  • Never pay to get a loan

Firstfund doesn’t charge you to apply. A real lender pays the loan into your business’s bank account, deducts any processing fee shown in the KFS, and never asks for money upfront.

Based on Reserve Bank of India directions on Key Facts Statements (2024), pre-payment charges (2025) and digital lending (2025). Your lender’s KFS and loan agreement have the final terms.

Questions

Business loans in Mumbai: FAQs.

Does my business need to be in Mumbai?

Lenders lend where they operate, so where your business is registered and runs decides which lenders can serve you. Share your business PIN code and our team will check.

Do I need GST registration?

Many lenders ask for it, but not all. Some accept other business proof, such as Udyam registration or a shop licence, especially for smaller amounts.

Do I need collateral?

Not always. Many lenders offer unsecured business loans. Larger amounts or longer tenures may need security, such as property or the equipment you buy.

My shop is in Mumbai but my warehouse is in Bhiwandi. Which address do lenders use?

Lenders look at where the business is registered and where it operates. Share both PIN codes; some lenders serve one area and not the other.

Is Udyam registration worth doing before I apply?

Yes. It is free, done online with PAN and Aadhaar, and many lenders ask for it. It also gives micro and small businesses the protection of the MSMED Act’s 45-day payment rule.

Does Firstfund charge me anything?

No. Sharing your details with Firstfund is free. Lenders may charge a processing fee, which they must show in the Key Fact Statement.
