Local guide

Doing business in Chennai.

Chennai’s businesses include the auto-component and engineering suppliers of Ambattur, Guindy, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, leather and textile exporters, the wholesale markets of George Town and Parrys, and busy retail in T. Nagar.

Suppliers to large manufacturers often need working capital and machinery finance, and retailers stock up before Deepavali and Pongal. If you sell to big buyers on credit, TReDS and invoice discounting can shorten the wait for payment. Lenders will ask for GST returns, bank statements, 2 years of ITR and your Udyam certificate.

Lenders set their coverage by PIN code, and the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belts lie outside Chennai city, so units there may see different lenders from shops in George Town. Share your business PIN code to see who can lend to you.

Good to know

Your rights as a business borrower.

  • A Key Fact Statement before you sign

For MSME term loans, the lender must give you a Key Fact Statement with the APR, every fee and the repayment schedule before you sign. A fee that isn’t in it can’t be charged without your consent.

  • No prepayment fee on many floating-rate loans

For floating-rate business loans to individuals and micro and small enterprises, sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, banks and larger NBFCs can’t charge a prepayment fee. Small finance banks, regional rural banks, some co-operative banks and mid-sized NBFCs can’t charge one on such loans up to ₹50 lakh.

  • Never pay to get a loan

Firstfund doesn’t charge you to apply. A real lender pays the loan into your business’s bank account, deducts any processing fee shown in the KFS, and never asks for money upfront.

Based on Reserve Bank of India directions on Key Facts Statements (2024), pre-payment charges (2025) and digital lending (2025). Your lender’s KFS and loan agreement have the final terms.

Questions

Business loans in Chennai: FAQs.

Does my business need to be in Chennai?

Lenders lend where they operate, so where your business is registered and runs decides which lenders can serve you. Share your business PIN code and our team will check.

Do I need GST registration?

Many lenders ask for it, but not all. Some accept other business proof, such as Udyam registration or a shop licence, especially for smaller amounts.

Do I need collateral?

Not always. Many lenders offer unsecured business loans. Larger amounts or longer tenures may need security, such as property or the equipment you buy.

I export leather goods. What finance suits me?

Alongside business loans, banks offer export finance such as packing credit before shipment and export bill discounting after it. Tell our team what you need and we will guide you.

My unit is in Kancheepuram district. Can I apply?

Yes. Lenders decide by PIN code, not city limits, and many serve the industrial belts in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts. Share your business PIN code and our team will check.

Does Firstfund charge me anything?

No. Sharing your details with Firstfund is free. Lenders may charge a processing fee, which they must show in the Key Fact Statement.
