Local guide

Doing business in Kolkata.

Kolkata is eastern India’s trading capital, with wholesale markets in Burrabazar, Posta and Canning Street, engineering and foundry units in Howrah, leather units at Bantala, and a growing IT and services base in Salt Lake and New Town.

Traders often need working capital and stock finance, while engineering units borrow for machinery and raw material. Many businesses here are long-running family firms: lenders value that history, but still want recent GST returns, bank statements and ITR in the firm’s name. Keep your trade licence from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation or your local municipality ready as business proof.

Coverage is set PIN code by PIN code, so a foundry in Howrah and a wholesale shop in Burrabazar may be served by different lenders. Share your business PIN code to see who can lend to you.

Good to know

Your rights as a business borrower.

  • A Key Fact Statement before you sign

For MSME term loans, the lender must give you a Key Fact Statement with the APR, every fee and the repayment schedule before you sign. A fee that isn’t in it can’t be charged without your consent.

  • No prepayment fee on many floating-rate loans

For floating-rate business loans to individuals and micro and small enterprises, sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, banks and larger NBFCs can’t charge a prepayment fee. Small finance banks, regional rural banks, some co-operative banks and mid-sized NBFCs can’t charge one on such loans up to ₹50 lakh.

  • Never pay to get a loan

Firstfund doesn’t charge you to apply. A real lender pays the loan into your business’s bank account, deducts any processing fee shown in the KFS, and never asks for money upfront.

Based on Reserve Bank of India directions on Key Facts Statements (2024), pre-payment charges (2025) and digital lending (2025). Your lender’s KFS and loan agreement have the final terms.

Questions

Business loans in Kolkata: FAQs.

Does my business need to be in Kolkata?

Lenders lend where they operate, so where your business is registered and runs decides which lenders can serve you. Share your business PIN code and our team will check.

Do I need GST registration?

Many lenders ask for it, but not all. Some accept other business proof, such as Udyam registration or a shop licence, especially for smaller amounts.

Do I need collateral?

Not always. Many lenders offer unsecured business loans. Larger amounts or longer tenures may need security, such as property or the equipment you buy.

Our family firm is a partnership. Who signs the loan?

The firm borrows, and lenders usually ask the partners to sign or guarantee the loan. Keep the partnership deed and each partner’s PAN and Aadhaar ready.

Can our old godown be the security?

Many lenders accept commercial property as security for larger loans after a legal check and a valuation. Clear title papers make this much quicker.

Does Firstfund charge me anything?

No. Sharing your details with Firstfund is free. Lenders may charge a processing fee, which they must show in the Key Fact Statement.
